6 Animated Movies with Messages that Deliver Life Lessons

Cartoons aren’t just a source of entertainment. There are plenty of things to learn from them as well.

Kelly Loosli, director of BYU’s animation program, advocates the use of animation in education. Generations of children have learnt life lessons about believing in oneself, the meaning of friendship and love from animated movies. “When you engage a child in animation, you can convey messages strongly,” Loosli said. “Animation allows kids to drop their guard and go into an imaginary world. The messages come through even more vivid.”

We have been witnessing this for a while now in our movies and some of the messages presented are just what kids today need to learn. Here are our top picks of animated movies with messages that will warm your heart and teach you lessons about life best learnt from an animated character.

LET’S CREATE AN ANIMATED FILM THAT WOWS THE VIEWERS & TEACHES THEM A THING OR TWO!

Cartoon Movies with Moral Lessons that are Worth Remembering:

    1. Toy Story

    Toy Story, animated movie

Child psychologist David Elkind says that most children have a feeling of being the center of attention that can lead to a sense of invulnerability. Though through life situations, they eventually learn that they are just a part of the bigger picture, animations are a good way to subtly but effectively introduce them to this reality earlier on. One movie that did a great job of presenting this lesson was Toy Story when Andy is suddenly replaced by the new and shiny Buzz LightYear toy.

    2. Finding Nemo

    Finding nemo, animated movie

Yes, it is an adorable story of young fish looking to see the world and a loving by paranoid father fish refusing to allow it. The story of the young fishes capture and his father’s heroics to save him is a lesson in family love that cannot be forgotten. But there is another message in the very adorable movie that is a little more subtle and comes from the ever-comic Dory, just keep fishing! A brilliant way to tell kids that no matter what the challenge or disability, you never give up.

    3. Up

    Up, animated movie

In today’s world where the wheels never stop turning, it is easy to lose sight of what matters and the ones you love. And that is the message that the beautiful animation in UP holds for the young and adult audience alike. Don’t wait to lose someone to realize how much you loved him or her, take the time to spend with them now. A lesson that the world will always need to be reminded.

    4. Kung Fu Panda

    Kung fu panda, animated movie

The biggest lesson every kid needs is to understand the importance of confidence and belief in oneself. And when the message is delivered by a really adorable and large Panda, there is no way anyone is going to miss it.

    5. Ice Age

    Ice Age, animated movie

NYU Child Study Centre published in an article that, “Research shows that children with friends have a greater sense of well-being, better self-esteem and fewer social problems as adults than individuals without friends,”

The ice age is all about 3 unlikely animals getting together and forming a friendship that beats even the odds of death and danger to get a child across the ice cap to his father. Maybe breaking the boundaries of a playground won’t seem so scary to our young ones after this cartoon movie with a moral lesson.

    6. Wall E

    Wall E, animated movie

The tale of two robots that fought all the odds and fell in love is just too cute to ignore but this tale also came with a more subtle but scary message. It very clearly said that if we humans went about polluting the planet the way we are, soon we will need to head off to space just to survive! Maybe growing up messages of this nature will make our next generation more sensible when it comes to being green. One can always hope.

    7. Over the Hedge

    Over the hedge, animated movie

Deforestation is really not something we worry about much but when these animals wake to find their forest cut down and a whole bunch of houses there instead, it seems a lot more real.

Maybe we need a few more such English animated movies animated movies with messages coming out and soon. And these are just some of the ones that you have seen the big screen. Animation services play a big role in education industry today teaching kids not just life lessons but also lessons they need to acquire skills needed professionally.

  • Who claimed victory? The winners for visual effects and animation at the Oscars 2015

Guess what we were doing at 5:30 am today morning? Watching the Oscar awards 2015 of course! And every time, the winner in an award category was to be announced we were leaping out of seats in joy. Here are the winners in the visual effects and animation category. It gives us great pleasure even thinking back to when we saw these marvels on screen for the first time.

    Best Visual Effects

Winner: Interstellar, Paul Franklin, Andrew Lockley, Ian Hunter, and Scott Fisher

There was no surprise here. After all, Interstellar changed the very way visual effects was approached in sci-fi movies for decades now. Nothing this realistic was attempted till date and the success was spectacular. Double Negative wrote a brand new software to put together the wormhole and then replicated the same for creating the black holes as light does not travel in straight lines in these environments. The science behind the entire process was so strong that Paul Franklin was able to use the research to submit a scientific papers backed by results. Not just that, Chris Nolan went a step ahead and changed the very way visual effects was approached in the movie. Normally treated as a post-production aspect, the green screen was a fixture when shooting a scene that requires visual effects. Nolan elimated the use of green screen entirely by turning the VFX into a pre-production aspect for this movie. He then put up large projection screens and mounted a camera on a crane. When the actors seemed awe struck by the visuals, it was because they were actually awe struck! With so many ground breaking changes in the making of the film, it is was obvious that the results would be spectacular. Interstellar most certainly deserved the win this year!

    Best Animated Feature

Winner: Big Hero 6 by Disney’s Animation Studio

The Big Hero 6 went down as a marker in history of animation. The movie is inspired by a Marvel comic, is about a robotics prodigy who creates a team of Superhero’s to battle a masked villain. The movie may not have been as big a box office hit as Frozen or made Disney as much money on the revenue scale but the very huggable Baymax and the renderer that brought him to life hyperon will certainly never be forgotten. It took 200 hours and 2 years to build the rendered and it wasn’t even tested before the movie was put into production but the hallow and glowing results that it brought to Baymax was so appealing that Don Hall and Chris Williams took the risk of using it anyway. And the risk paid off. Not only was the movie loved but it has also won them an Oscar today beating the second part of How to Train Your Dragon.

    Best Animated Short

Winner: Feast by Disney’s Animation Studio

Whoever brought tickets for the Big Hero 6 in 2014 was in for a treat with the animated short “Feast” being thrown in as a part of the deal. The short was made so show the love life of a man through the view of his dog and food. The 3D animation work along with the expressions of the adorable boston terrier as he connects his humans life and emotions to his dinners is certainly a fresh perspective at the whole scenario that has never been touched upon before. It was engaging, emotional and as accurate as possible. Feast not just won the Oscars but was also awards honours for 3D achievement at the 3D creative arts awards. Disney’s Animation Studio is trying to find its way to its roots with bringing animated shorts back to life and Feast was among their first steps towards it.

We say that the visual effects and animation studios behind these movies most definitely deserve all the credit, appreciation, and love they have received today. What do you say?

  • Golden Globe Awards 2015: Nominees and winner for the Best Animated Feature Film

    Best Animated Film

The awards season is here and the golden globes aired just a few weeks back. With the hit duo of Fey and Pohlear hosting it for the third and final time, the ceremony was certainly a force to watch out for. But we are not here to discuss the success of the show or any of the event details, so let’s move on to the topic at hand. Which feature films were nominated to the animated movie category and who took home the award?

The nominees for the Best Animated Feature Film

    Big Hero 6

    Best Animated Film

The Big Hero 6 didn’t turn into a global avalanche like frozen but it did make a mark in animation history! The real hero of this movie is not Baymax, the very huggable robot, but the team that built the technology which made Baymax and rest of the movie possible.

The Hyperion is a light rendering software that took two years and 200 computing hours to build. By the time, this movie was set to be made, the software was not even tested. Don Hall explained that even though the CTO of Walt Disney Animation Studio, Andy Hendrickson, was not even sure if the software would work, the character tests showed that Baymax needed to be hallow and glow for it to have the charm they desired.  And the visuals that the software produced were so stunning that the Don Hall and Chris Williams decided to go ahead and take the risk anyway!

    The Book of Life

The Book Of Life Top Animated Film

The Book of Life is an awe-inspiring story line taken straight from the cultural books of Mexico that talk about the day of death. As a children’s movie, it looks towards teaching children the value of leading a moral life and about following their own path. A movie put together to reach the heart of kids is without the right character creation would never succeed. That is why the characters of Manolo, Maria, Mary Beth, Jaoquin and their journey needed to stand out and sure did!

    The Boxtrolls

    The Boxtrolls Animated Movie

The Boxtrolls is a perfect combination of art and science using stop motion to make the entire movie. Stop motion is a technique that has been used in the making of classics like King Kong and is a rather pain staking way to make a movie where every character has to be hand crafted. These characters are then placed on the sets to take pictures of every shot which is then strung into an entire clip. But this movie did see the use of some technology that saved the makers a whole lot of pain. 3D printing technology that they used allowed them to give the characters more lifelike expressions, especially as they could be printed in the thousands. And even then, it took 30 animators 18 months and 79 sets to make this movie.

How to Train Your Dragon 2

How to Train Your Dragon 2 Animated Movie

Dream Works unleashed their secret weapon during the making of this movie. The Apollo technology took 5 years to make in collaboration with Intel and it was certainly worth it. The advanced suite of tools that comes with this technology handed artists the tools that made it easier and quicker to create and do so much more than they could before! Doesn’t that make sense considering how amazing the visuals in this movie looked? The fight sequences and the elaborate environments are of course stunning but that one scene when Toothless gets annoyed with Hiccup for senselessly risking his life and the display of emotions in that one scene shall remain etched in our minds forever.

    The Lego Movie

    The Lego Animated Movie

Co-director Chris Miller responded to a tweet stating that this movie is mostly a result of CG animation, a little stop motion and some real Lego still sets comped in. To add to the authenticity of the movie, the team actually played around with Lego sets to grasp exactly what the digital image should like. The results of this was so stunning that the audience is confused at most places as to what was CG and what was the real in the movie!

    Predictions

Indiwire took a few guesses and said that The Lego Movie was most likely to win but How to Train Your Dragon 2 stood a chance too.

    Who actually won?

The result proved that Indiwire wasn’t too off with their guessing when How to Train Your Dragon 2 walked away with the award this year!

If you haven’t seen How to Train Your Dragon 2 yet, here is the trailer to encourage you to get around to it sooner rather than later!

  • Beginners Guide: How To Create A Simple 3D Animation In 6 Simple Steps

    1 (2)

You have never missed a show of Aladdin, ever! And neither have you moved away from the TV when a Kung Fu Panda movie is on. They are both animated movies. But what differs about them is how we feel at the end of it! In a 2D animation, the story that the character is a part off becomes everything and we root for him. Haven’t we always cheered Aladdin on as he fights to beat the bad guys and save the kingdom? In a 3D animation, we fall in love the whole story and wish for Po keep Kung Fu alive, of course. But we also love the little nuisances about the character that can be brought to the fore front here. Po and his adorable star struck silliness can never be forgotten! To create memorable characters like these, you should explore how to create 3D animation and experiment with simple 3D animation techniques to start your journey.

    What brings about this difference?

Let’s talk a little bit about the 2D and 3D animation creation process with respect to the basic differences in between them.

    • 2D animation is heavily dependent on drawings while 3D animation is more software intensive, where a virtual mise en scene is created based on pre-viz 2D drawings.
    • In a 2D animation, if you are drawing someone walking, the portions of the frame that you cannot see can be ignored. This is not something that 3D animators can afford to do. It is all one big frame where every little detail takes precedence.
    • Another point to keep in mind is that one second of animation has about 24 frames in it. In a 2D animation when the change in movement is too little it is okay to use the same drawing for a few frames. It looks like the character is not moving and that is fine, because 2D has developed its own style over the decades which the audience has accepted. Whereas in a 3D animation, when a character seems completely still, it is an awkward sight. Can you image little nemo’s dad just holding still there for a few seconds while he desperately looks for his son? This makes the animation tougher to create. It allows the animator to bring in small yet subtle changes sometimes in the expressions on the face or maybe the posture of the character, adding an element of emotion and life.

And it is not impossibly hard to do either! Obviously, it would be hard to meet the Disney quality at the very beginning but we can start simple and work our way up. Here is how you can start by creating a small bit of animation.

If you’re questioning how to make 3d animated videos, start by studying the fundamentals of how to make 3d animation. Once you have a solid understanding of the foundations, you may progress to more complex approaches and finally learn how to create 3d animation like a professional. Starting with a simple 3D animation project will allow you to gain confidence and abilities.

    Step by step guidelines

Keep in mind that every animator has his/her own style. But while you are still finding your footing, it is best to follow a general procedure that will help you deliver better results.

Step 1: Find a reference video

This is by far the most important step there is.

You might think that you know an action well but as a designer you will look at it from an entirely different perspective. Make sure you look up references before you begin the creation.

The whole process will feel like you are shooting blind if you skip this!

Step 2: Identify the important poses that define the animation

The next step in line would be to identify what are known as the defining poses.

These are the individual shots that people can look at even without the movement and figure out what is likely to happen. Like in a comic book strip. They aren’t moving but all the right actions are emphasised on. Put the key poses out like a strip and they should tell you a story.

Once you have identified these, it is essential to get them right. This step is as important as laying the foundation of a building! It simply cannot be wobbly.

Step 3: Add in the poses that fill in between

Next in line is adding the intermediate poses between the defining poses.

Intermediate poses are what we place in between the key poses that make the animation look as close to an actual movement as possible in the step mode. Step mode is the stage where we don’t still allow the computer interpolation between the frames due to which it will seem choppy.

Step 4: Connecting the defining and intermediate poses.

In this stage, we allow the computer to interpolate between each step, making it seem smoother.

Titbit: The computer could be better at this interconnection, so you need to ensure that you do an excellent job with the blocking.

Now that we have our animation connecting together, it is time to focus on making it even smoother.

Step 5: Introducing a flow to the animation

This is the time to ensure that all the curves are correct and that the animation doesn’t seem too abrupt. By the end of this step, the animation must look almost done.

Step 6: Adding in the human touch

This is the part that makes 3D animations super cool.

Here is where we add all those tiny gestures that makes the world of animation seem more real. It is best to use this stage to add in the elements that make the action seem more believable.

And if you look at your screen now you have a 3D animation staring back at you!

  • Animation and VFX…what’s trending?

    Animation and VFX…what’s trending?

What would a movie like Avatar be without animation and VFX? Absolutely nothing. It is the magic of animation and VFX that makes the impossible…virtually possible! Though the Indian Animation and VFX industry is still nascent, it is estimated to grow at a whopping 30% annually for the next three years, resulting in a $15 billion industry.

    Vfx and animation trends
    Animation vfx trends in India

While the focus always has been more on animation, VFX too is growing by leaps and bounds. There has been a significant increase in the amount of VFX used in movies as well as in television shows. Usage of VFX saves a considerable amount of money for the producers. Creating sets, especially for mythological shows is a costly affair and VFX helps in reducing these costs by around 60-70%. No wonder that the Indian producers are relying more on VFX nowadays.

The animation and VFX industry has transformed and emerged as one of the most sought-after professions, as well as the dire need of the media industry. And the transformation doesn’t stop here. The animation industry growth in India keeps upgrading itself with the latest technology, tools, software…and keeps producing wonders after wonders.  Here’s a glance at what’s trending…

The Bengal Tiger in the movie ‘The life of Pie’ is a perfect example of the combined magic of technological advances and natural talent. The animators marvelously created a tiger that seemed so real, it seemed hard to believe that they need not stage a real tiger for the shoot.

Motion Capture Technique is the latest and has already created a lot of buzz. James Cameron’s Avatar successfully used this technique coupled with CGI (Computer Generated Imagery) which set a trend in the film making industry. In this technique, the actors wear skin-tight suits with markers attached to them which reflect beams of infrared light and are sent to a special camera system. The movements are then captured and are then transferred to a virtual character. If you wish to have a sneak peek  into the animation techniques used in Avatar, here’s the link.

Rajnikant’s upcoming movie Kochadaiyyan has made use of motion capture technology and is one of the most awaited films. It would be interesting to see how this Indian movie fairs in comparison with Avatar.

Many would opine that the Indian Animation Industry is not up to the mark when it comes to the comparison with Hollywood animation movies. But did you know, major animation studios and producers from all over the world are turning to India to outsource their projects? India is considered to be cost effective, and more importantly,   India is believed to provide world-class animation.

The Lion King, Finding Nemo are a few of Hollywood films with Indian expertise. So why are Indian films.

Watch out for the Indian animation industry. It’s all set to capture your imaginations and set a new high!

  • Outsourcing is the ‘In thing’!

Life of Pi and Prometheus thrilled one and all and were nominated for the Academy Awards. But what would be more thrilling is to know that these movies owe a good deal to the work done by a Bangalore-based firm. Many Hollywood movies with spellbinding effects have been nurtured overseas in countries like India and the Philippines. Animation giants like Walt Disney, IMAX and Sony are outsourcing animation to India on a large scale. Cities such as Mumbai, Pune, Chennai, Bangalore and Trivandrum are emerging as animation hubs. Let’s have a glance at the benefits of animation outsourcing.

Let’s have a glance at why global entertainment firms are flocking to India.

    a) The cost of animation outsourcing production in India is one-fourth that of North America and about 35 per cent lower than in countries such as Korea and the Philippines. A report states that the key countries outsourcing animation production work to India include the US, the UK, France, Italy, and Spain.

    b) India has the second largest entertainment industry in the world. Animation outsourcing studios in the country provide a large pool of low-cost, high-quality artists and technical support. A number of Indian Best VFX Outsourcing Company have set up hi-tech studios (equipped with state-of-the-art hardware and software) to execute overseas projects.

    c) Large English speaking workforce which effectively overcomes the language barrier. Several animation companies in the country are also creating skilled manpower for the animation market through various training programs.

Indian studios today boast a state-of-the-art setup, highly skilled artists and cost-efficient services. But the question is…is this enough to consider a studio to outsource your ambitious project?
A lot needs to be considered while zeroing in on the studio you want to work with. First, you need to look for a studio that shares your passion and looks at your project from a creator’s point of view, not merely as someone who is supposed to provide you with technical expertise. It’s essential to go through the previous work of every studio and analyse their work from an audience’s perspective and a critic’s perspective. This helps you know the strengths and weaknesses of that studio, and then you know exactly how much you can expect from that studio and where it stands.

For instance, looking at Toolbox’s portfolio, which boasts of award-winning work in rotoscopy for major Hollywood studios and projects such as Mumbai Indians Promo, L’OREAL, Chintoo, Pune 52, Time Please, Tata Sky VOD, Yamaha, Samsung Galaxy S2, Bournvita and, you instantly know that you will be handing over your project to someone who has a proven track record of delivering the best and you can expect the same too. What makes Toolbox stand out from the rest is its passion for offering services and creative solutions that culminate into a cutting-edge product that you would identify with.

Its passion for animation, the Best VFX outsourcing company, and Digital Videos, its ultra-modern infrastructure—a 5000 sq. ft. facility, an in-house chroma floor, a 24-track sound studio—and its dedicated team of VFX Supervisors, Productions, Animators, Motion Graphics Artists, and Sound Designers make Toolbox an obvious choice for outsourcing animation.

You have the right concept and the right country; all you need to do is find the right studio, and then you will have nailed it perfectly!
