With so many different ways to convey a message or promote a product or service, there is no dearth of formats when it comes to animated videos being made by brands and companies. One such format is 2D character animation, where one or more characters are brought to life by animating them.

Given the massive popularity and widespread usage of 2D character animation videos, let us discuss the following:

    • Why use animated videos?
    • What is 2D animation?
    • What is the difference between 2D and 3D animation?
    • What are the advantages of 2D animation?
    • What are some good examples of 2D character animation videos?

So, why should you use animated videos?

Well, animation is one visual format that cuts across geographies and demographics, appealing to people of all kinds. So, as a business, using animation for creating explainer videos can truly help you reach your target audience, no matter who or where they are.

Another strong reason to choose animation as your format is that it is visually appealing and highly engaging – so there are high chances of people watching, enjoying and remembering the video.

Professional 2D animation video creation companies are skilled in luring customers. They generate novel and original thoughts as a result. It becomes much more provocative when used to promote a brand. For instance, the intricacy of the major characters in 2D animated films might vary. Simple drawings or more detailed sketches are also acceptable. To be clear, they are free to follow the rules established by the client and are fulfilling all of their requirements.

Animated explainer videos have yielded incredible results for brands and businesses in the past and continue to do so even today. As a format that resonates with all kinds of people, 2D animated explainer videos are the go-tochoice for companies that wish to:

    • Convey a brand message
    • Explain an idea, concept or business offering
    • Launch a new product in the market
    • Promote a product or service
    • Demonstrate the utility and features of a product
    • Educate the audience about the usage of a product or service

What is 2D animation? What is the difference between 2D and 3D animation?

2D animation involves the creation of movement in a two-dimensional space. Think classic television shows like The Simpsons, Bugs Bunny, South Park, The Jungle Book and Rick and Morty. In 2D animation, thousands of images are compiled together and run as film at 24 frames per second.

3D animation, on the other hand, allows content makers to create more realistic-looking objects or characters. Techniques like shading, texturing and lighting can further help these objects look solid in a three-dimensional perspective. Some good examples of 3D animation are – Toy Story 4, Frozen, The Incredibles, How to Train Your Dragon and Shrek.

While both 2D and 3D animation videos are relevant and popular, some work better than the others, depending on the subject at hand and the motive of the video.

How can brands create an impact with 2d character animation?

brands are constantly seeking innovative ways to capture attention, connect with their audience, and create a lasting impact. One powerful tool that can help achieve these goals is 2D character animation. By leveraging the charm and versatility of animated characters, brands can effectively convey their messages, tell compelling stories, and leave a memorable impression on their target audience. Here are some key ways brands can create an impact with 2D character animation.

Establish a relatable brand personality: 2D character animation allows brands to personify their values, mission, and brand identity through animated characters. By carefully crafting characters that resonate with your target audience, you can establish a relatable brand personality that fosters emotional connections. Whether it’s a friendly mascot, a relatable hero, or a charismatic spokesperson, characters can bring your brand to life and make it more approachable and relatable.

Tell engaging brand stories: Storytelling is a powerful tool in marketing, and 2D character animation provides a dynamic medium to tell engaging brand stories. Characters can be the protagonists in narratives that highlight your brand’s unique selling points, showcase product benefits, or evoke emotions. Through well-crafted narratives, brands can captivate their audience, build anticipation, and create memorable experiences that leave a lasting impact.

Increase brand recognition: Consistent use of animated characters in your branding efforts can significantly increase brand recognition. When viewers see your characters consistently across different marketing channels and campaigns, they form a strong association between the characters and your brand. Over time, this association can enhance brand recall and make your brand more recognizable in a crowded marketplace.

Simplify complex information: 2D character animation is an excellent tool for simplifying complex information. Characters can be used to explain intricate concepts, demonstrate product features, or guide users through processes. By presenting information in a visually appealing and engaging way, brands can make complex ideas more accessible, memorable, and easier to understand for their audience.

Foster emotional connections: Animated characters have the ability to evoke emotions and create a sense of connection with the audience. Whether it’s through humor, empathy, or shared experiences, well-designed characters can elicit emotional responses that resonate with viewers. By tapping into these emotions, brands can forge stronger connections, build trust, and establish long-lasting relationships with their customers.

Enhance brand recall: Memorable characters have the power to stay in the minds of your audience long after they have engaged with your brand. A well-designed and likable 2D character can become a memorable symbol of your brand, leading to improved brand recall. This can be particularly valuable in competitive markets where standing out and being remembered is crucial.

  • Hybrid Animation and How It is Making an Impact in the Animation Industry

While 2D was the purer and the original form of animation, advancements technology gave rise to the slicker and more well-rounded 3D style. The former is charming yet a little less engrossing, the latter is more engaging but can get a bit much. Both are great forms of animation and with their widespread prevalence in media today, be it ads, films, music videos or television series, animators have started thinking out of the box.

    Hybrid 2d 3d animation definition

2D animation refers to the process of creating motion in a two-dimensional space. It is a traditional animation technique that has been used for decades to bring characters, objects, and environments to life on screens both big and small. In contrast to 3D animation, which involves creating a three-dimensional digital environment, 2D animation focuses on the manipulation of flat, two-dimensional images.

In traditional 2D animation, each frame is hand-drawn or digitally created by artists. These individual frames are then sequenced together in rapid succession to create the illusion of movement. This method of animation has its roots in traditional hand-drawn cel animation, where transparent sheets called cells were used to create each frame. With the advancement of technology, digital tools and software have become popular for creating 2D animation, allowing for more flexibility and efficiency in the process.

The core principle behind 2D animation is the concept of “keyframes” and “in-between frames.” Keyframes represent the significant poses or moments in the animation, while in-between frames are the intermediate frames that connect the keyframes, creating a smooth transition between them. Animators carefully craft these frames, paying attention to details such as timing, spacing, and movement, to bring the characters or objects to life with believable motion.

This creative approach to animatronics has given birth to hybrid animation is a blend of the sensibilities of both two-dimensional and three-dimension styles.

    What is hybrid animation

Hybrid animation refers to the blending of different animation techniques or styles to create a unique and visually engaging result. It combines elements from various animation approaches, such as traditional hand-drawn animation, computer-generated imagery (CGI), stop motion, or even live-action footage. The goal of hybrid animation is to leverage the strengths of each technique to enhance the overall visual storytelling.

    How Does Hybrid Animation Work?

Hybrid animation is the blending of 2D and 3D animation thus, mixing two and three dimensions in the same frame to offer a unique visual perspective. 2D animation is traditionally known as hand-drawn or analogue animation, even though you can easily render in 2D on computers, and many creators do this today. The principle is still the same though. Each shot is created frame by frame in sequential order and then these images are placed in a timeline to create motion as it were.

3D animation can be created using stop-motion and clay models or puppets, or can be entirely computer-generated using software such as Maya, 3DS Max, Blender, Houdini and Flash.

As we mentioned earlier, the perspectives offered by the two disciplines have their own distinct visualizations, so creating an animation that utilizes both is quite challenging. But when executed well, the results can be absolutely breathtaking. There are different approaches one can take while blending these too, like having the background in 2D besides giving a 3D treatment to the protagonist or primary character or vice versa.

The Impact of Hybrid Animation – Two Great (and well-known) Examples

Here are two extremely famous examples of hybrid animation, that showcase how both these approaches can be taken.

    The Iron Giant –

Created in 1999, this Warner Bros. Sci-Fi animation has become a bit of a cult classic today. Based on a 60s novel by the same name, the film has some huge names for voice characters including Vin Diesel for the Giant, Jennifer Aniston, Harry Connick Jr and more. It is a charming tale of the friendship between a boy and a giant metal robot of sorts. Another great example of visual storytelling can be seen where the Iron Giant takes the exact opposite approach to Spirit (see below). Here, the backgrounds are rendered in 2D while the main characters are all three-dimensional.

A quote from the film’s director (making his debut) and legend in animation circles today – Brad Bird – explains why this approach was taken and more of that in this archived Warner Bros ‘making of’ page for the movies. He says, “It is difficult for a human to draw a big, solid metallic object. Animators excel at drawing movement and living, fluid objects. The giant originates from a different world, so we chose to create the giant using computer animation, CGI, which would give him the mass and solidity and also give the impression that it’s from a different place. The separation between the 2D-animation and the CGI is something that helped establish the fish-out-of-water facet of the story.”

While The Iron Giant swept home, nine awards at that year’s Annies (the top animation awards), the film itself didn’t get a great reception at the box office, largely due to WB’s lack of promotion. Though today, it is revered as one of the great examples in animated feature film history and is rightly lauded for its unique approach.

Check out the trailer of its re-mastered version:

Spirit: Stallion of the Cimarron –

This 2002 DreamWorks animation was set in the American Wild West in the 19th century and follows the adventures of the titular character, Spirit, a Mustang colt whose inner monologue is voiced by Matt Damon. It tells a story of immense leadership, courage, and friendship, as its themes. The film was nominated for an Oscar for best animation and is an absolute visual treat. Spirit uses lush, colourful 3D backgrounds, but the primary characters are all hand-drawn in traditional 2D style.

A document written by Doug Cooper, the Digital Supervisor at DreamWorks Feature Animation explains the approach, saying, “The primary character in “Spirit” is a traditionally drawn 2D animated horse, which inhabits the richly detailed tapestry of the American Wild West at the turn of the century. The heavy use of 3D sets and camera moves brought an extra challenge to the traditional animators in needing to precisely match the sometimes subtle and slow perspective changes that occurred throughout a shot.” Fascinating, isn’t it?

Here’s the trailer of the film so you can see what the final result was:

These are just two seminal examples of an underrated-yet-prolific form of animation. While the challenges posed by this type of hybrid animation mean, it isn’t the most widely-used approach, the creators who dare to be brave may end up with a visual masterpiece akin to these two fine examples on their hands if they do venture in this direction.

At Toolbox Studio, we are great proponents of novel approaches and techniques involved in filmmaking, especially when it comes to animation for films, television, advertisements and web productions. Take a look at our selection of some of the best animation projects we have worked on.

  • Why You Should Incorporate Videos in Your eLearning Strategy

The ability of eLearning (in education, training and even corporate circles) to impart instruction, further training, and even acquire an education through electronic media and the internet is boundless. It is convenient, can be consumed anywhere thanks to smart devices, laptops and the like, and can be carried out at the learner’s convenience.

As the title suggests, this article aims to establish the undeniable advantages of incorporating videos in your video-based e-learning strategy.

Video-based eLearning is a rapidly growing industry

As this Forbes article reports, “Global eLearning market to reach $325 billion by 2025 from $107 Billion in 2015.”

That’s right, already a billion-dollar industry globally by the year 2015, eLearning is expected to grow by more than 300% to an estimated $325 billion by 2025 the world over. That is a meteoric rise and is clearly indicative of just how much potential eLearning offers to those willing to adopt it.

Another interesting statistic the same article mentions is that revenue from online courses in 2017 was $46 billion. Thus, the public is responding to the idea of harnessing the concept of e-learning as a platform and its ability to offer education and information.

    Videos for eLearning

One of the most efficient ways to share knowledge and information across the electronic medium is through the format of videos. A vast majority of consumption on the internet is already going down the video route. As this Business Insider piece indicates, “Video will represent 82% of all IP traffic in 2021, including consumer and business IP traffic, amounting to a million minutes of video transmitted through networks every second.”

Another article by Medium sheds light on the effectiveness of video in learning, citing Forrester Research, which claims that company employees are 75% more likely to consume content through video than other mediums, such as documents, articles online, or emails. Video offers many benefits compared to other media for sharing content in the video-based e-learning space.

Read about our eLearning video creation capabilities here.

Benefits of incorporating videos in eLearning

    • Attracting and holding attention

It is less likely to get distracted when watching a video than when reading an article or listening to audio. This is because all your senses are engaged in watching a video, so you are more “in it,” and your attention is arrested more than otherwise.

    • Greater interactivity

Videos lend themselves to interactivity. With formats such as Skype and other video calling services available, teaching through video can be an immensely interactive experience. It allows one-on-one instruction to be imparted, and the instructor can gauge the response from the person undergoing the course and amend their lessons accordingly.

    • Easier to consume

Video is definitely easier to consume than instructions in the text form. You don’t have to put in as much effort as you would into reading to able to consume and absorb the knowledge being shared through video. This makes eLearning through video much more digestible.

    • More demonstrative

Through video, you can share much more than just static instructions. Instead, you can demonstrate how to go about doing things. For example, the subject of the training is to learn how to use equipment. In that case, you can not only explain the steps involved but actually demonstrate them and visually depict each step’s result, making learning much easier.

Explore Toolbox Studio’s expert animated eLearning video services.

Unless the individual in question is highly motivated and focused, it is difficult to ensure that the learner will give the instruction his or her complete, undivided attention. If your storytelling is video-based, employees or students will be that much more engaged and motivated to continue receiving their training.

Another advantage of video is something we touched upon earlier. With the proliferation of smartphones in everyday life, and the widespread availability of the internet through data and Wi-Fi, this could be one of the keys to unlocking an even more effective eLearning program. You can optimize video-based content for smart devices, and have a system in place that could allow it to be consumed at the learner’s convenience.

This is the future of training for corporates, manufacturers, educational institutions and more. And as we saw from the article above, your workforce, clients and students will be much more receptive to video-based learning content than instruction in any other form.

Toolbox Studio has been delivering value to a wide range of clients from diverse industries, helping them get better results from their concept of eLearning programs with slick animation and crisp storytelling. • Top 3 Animated Videos & Their Astounding Results!

Animated videos and commercials have been around for over 75 years – they have been a mainstay in the marketing, branding and advertising world. In the recent past, we have seen several top brands as well as those at their nascent stages have tried to leverage this fantastic medium, including animated video ads, to reach their audience.
With the rise of digital platforms, animated videos advertising has become a powerful tool for engaging viewers in creative and memorable ways. Brands are also increasingly exploring 3D animated commercials to create immersive and visually stunning advertisements that capture attention.

So, what makes animation the go-to medium of communication for brands when it comes to branding, marketing and advertising? Here are some questions brands, businesses, marketing heads and advertising agencies need to think about:

      • What makes animation so effective?

      • What makes some animated videos work better than the others?

    • How many animated commercials or promotional videos do you actually remember without having to strain your mind too much?

Well, we have compiled a list of the three most striking animated videos (according to us) and the possible reasons for their popularity.

    1. Metro Trains: Dumb Ways to Die

The 2012 awareness campaign featuring cute animated characters committing suicide and dying in absurd sequences is the most awarded public safety campaign in Cannes’s history. With a whopping 170 million views on YouTube, the exciting animation, catchy jingle, and the message “Be Safe Around Trains” promoted rail safety and substantially decreased suicides and accidents. While the content was pretty compelling and an unprecedented way of passing on a public safety message, the adorable animation added to the video’s charm.

    2. Slack: Work, Simplified

That this slick animated video ad by Slack makes a superb impact is no surprise – after all, it hits the right nerve (of the right audience). A software aimed at simplifying work and teamwork, Slack had to ensure that its ad resonated with officegoers and freelancers who work with teams on different kinds of projects. The treatment of the video is where it wins hands down. With eye-catching colours, geometric shapes, everyday elements and relatable situations at work, the chaos-turned-into-seamless-management idea does wonders and gets the message across. This approach makes it one of the best-animated commercials for conveying complex messages in a visually engaging way.

    3. Nike: Risk Everything

Nike Football unleashed its blockbuster animated campaign three days before the 2014 FIFA World Cup kickoff. This was a fresh breath of air in the distinct frenetic style that Nike ads are made with, thanks to the unique concept, storyline and thrill. The basic theme revolved around real footballers struggling to keep the game alive owing to the emergence of their robotic clones. The character animation was on point and so was the direction. With animated videos advertising versions of the world’s biggest footballers, you can only imagine the kind of business impact the ad would have had.

These are just a few examples of fantastic animation and its use for marketing and advertising purposes. But it is also food for thought. Why do you think bigwigs like Nike, Adidas, Google, Heinz, Oreo, Starbucks, Coca Cola and the like feel the need to “advertise” themselves? Why would they choose animated video ads or 3D animated commercials as the standard vehicle for promoting themselves or their products?

Well, the answer is simple and here to stay.

    1. Animation is great fun to watch, irrespective of age.
    2. It is easy to explain (and understand) concepts when they are in animated form
    3. Animated videos are more likely to be shared
    4. Animation tends to have a high recall value
    5. Well-crafted animated videos can really lift a brand or product to another level

Whether it is for branding purposes or to launch a new product, animated videos assure a higher degree of engagement – and a well-made video can really deliver great business results, too.

At Toolbox Studio, we have a glorious track record of delivering diverse animated videos to renowned brands. Our best special effect movies, 2D animation, 3D animation, motion graphics and 3D product modeling capabilities clubbed together with our expertise in industrial animation and eLearning video creation means that we can provide a wide range of animation services to companies in India and abroad. • The Evolution of Animation in India

The Evolution of Animation in India

Animation is not the first thought that comes to mind when you think of the film industry in India. In fact, until fairly recently, animated films weren’t something you thought about at all in the Indian context. Indeed, even for most millennials, animated movies while growing up were “imports” more than anything else (i.e. made abroad and distributed through various media here). Little do Indians know that we were making animated films as early as 1934!

WE LOVE EXPERIMENTING WITH NEW-AGE ANIMATION. HERE’S PROOF!

Here’s an overview of the rich history of animation in the country, from its humble beginnings as black and white animations to the burgeoning industry it has become today.

    The First Animations in India

The Banyan Deer (1957) has often been cited as India’s first animated film but it did have predecessors. Pune-based Prabhat Film Company’s Jambu Kaka was released in Bombay on 15 November 1934. The short features a jackal and was animated by Raghunath K. Kelkar. Dadasaheb Phalke, Gunamoy Banerjee, K.S. Gupte and G.K. Gokhle were all pioneers of early animations in India. Most early animators in India were self-taught drawing their inspiration from cartoons made abroad. Phalke made a stop motion animated film in 1917 called Agkadyanchi Mouj (Matchsticks’ Fun). The Pea Brothers in 1934 by Gunamoy Banerjee was the first animated film shown in a theatre in India. The first animated film with a soundtrack, called On a Moonlit Night, was made by B.N. Sircar of the New Theatres of Bengal in 1934 as well.

Did you know that banyan deer is the first animation movie in India?

A pivotal moment in Indian animation was when Clair Weeks visited the Films Division of India. As a Disney animator who had worked on Disney successes like Bambi and Snow White and the Seven Dwarves, he helped establish the first animation studio in India and trained a group of Indian animators. They went on to make The Banyan Deer in 1957 which was India’s first animated movie in colour.

    Indian Animation Over the Years

The shortage of film stock during World War II was a key contributing factor towards the development of the animation industry in India, as filmmakers turned towards animation to tell their stories.

    Some notable animated works include:

    • Bakam Bhatt by Kolapur Cinetoons
    • Lafanga Langoor (1935) by Mohan Bhavani
    • Superman’s Myth (1939) by G.K. Gokhle
    • Akash Pataal (1939) by Mandar Malik
    • The War That Never Ends by IFI
    • Cinema Kadampam (1947) N. Thanu

Animation, even in the early years, was considered to be a valuable tool for educating children about the world around them. A landmark animated film from Films Division is Ek Anek Aur Ekta, a short traditionally animated educational film released in 1974 which aired frequently on Doordarshan. It was meant to teach children the value of unity. The first animated series was Ghayab Aya which aired on Doordarshan in 1986 which was about Ghyab, a friendly ghost.

The Indian animation industry came to a standstill in the 1980s without much initiative being taken to develop the industry. There were some attempts made in Bollywood without much success.  Roadside Romeo (2008) was India’s first 3D animated film made as a joint venture between Yash Raj Films and the Indian division of the Walt Disney Company.

    Animation and Advertisements

While commercial animated films in India stagnated, the advertising industry jumped on board. Some animated characters (made way back in the 1960s and thereafter) are still going strong today and are firmly etched in Indian hearts.

    A few notable characters include:

    • The Amul girl designed by Sylvester daCunha in 1966
    • Air India’s Maharaja designed by Umesh Rao in 1946
    • ICICI Bank’s Mr. Chintamani created by a clay animator named Nandkishor

The Present and the Future of the Animation Industry in India

Walt Disney style animation has proven that it does not work well as an Indian form of storytelling. India, with its myriad of art forms, may yet derive an animation style that is uniquely its own.

While India is yet to produce a commercially ground-breaking animated movie of its own, India has grown as an outsourcing hub for animation studios based abroad. There’s good reason for this, too! Indian studios today boast of state-of-the-art setups, highly skilled artists and cost-efficient services. Take a look at the story behind Toolbox Studio’s own animated movie The Delightful Story Behind the Delightful Story of GUSTER  or watch it here and you’ll know what we mean!

With the amazing amount of talent in the country, the future of animation in India looks bright indeed! Right from first indian animation film, till date, India has given some of the best films.

  • Industries and Businesses that can benefit from 3D Product Modeling

Industries and Businesses that can benefit from 3D Product Modeling

Before buying a product on an e-commerce website, you first ensure you have viewed the product image from various angles so you get a good idea of what it looks like from all sides.

What you see is called a photorealistic 3D product image. The term 3D Product modeling has gained a lot of momentum in recent years because it has so many diverse uses and applications.

Browse through Toolbox Studio’s work in the 3D product modelling space here.

    What is 3D modeling?

Commercial 3D models are three-dimensional models or renderings of three-dimensional objects. 3D models combine the three fields of geometry, mathematics and design to generate a 3D product image or representation of an object using specialized software. So basically, it uses different mathematical concepts, including curves and lines to generate 3D structures. These structures may be viewed as computer simulations, printed as a 2D rendering of a 3D object or printed (using a 3D printer) to generate a physical model.

    Where is 3D modeling used?

Commercial 3D models serve various purposes:

    1. Commercial 3D models are used to create realistic looking objects (or even people) to be represented on screen for various media
    2. They serve to create a visual representation of a concept before it is made.
    3. Commercial 3D models can be rotated to observe different aspects of the model from various perspectives.
    4. They give a spatial design when required allowing a visual representation of the arrangement of objects in about each other.
    5. Commercial 3D models allow easy correction of design features before any physical structures are made thereby reducing costs.
    6. 3D Product modeling is also used before printing anything using a 3D printer to generate the blueprint for printing.

Industries where 3D modeling is used extensively

As mentioned above, E-commerce is one of the key industries where 3D product images are in huge demand. The various angles from which a product can be viewed gives it a realistic feel and hence, it is used widely by almost all e-commerce businesses that sell products.

3D product modeling is used across various industries, serving unique purposes in each. Here are some of its most popular uses.

    1. Products

    headset

Prototypes are expensive, especially if you design something intricate like a watch, expensive jewelry, or massive, like a car. Making something that turns out differently than envisioned can save time and money. 3D product modeling eliminates that hazard. It also allows engineers to assemble hundreds of moving parts to test their functioning before they are made.

3D product modeling is also great for marketing a product. It creates stunning visuals that can be animated for advertisements to show a product’s features and capabilities. These visuals can also be interactive so potential customers can see how a product functions before purchasing.

It can also be used to remodel an existing product using various aspects of design and textures. 3D printing also allows manufacturers to play around with materials used in their initial designs to find the one that suits them the best as different materials can be used for printing.

    2. Games

    godzilla ps4 game

Video games are another famous avenue for 3D product modeling. As technology has progressed, games have become increasingly realistic, with large maps using interactive three-dimensional objects. Even characters in the game are not safe from the 3D touch, as gamers demand more realistic scenarios to explore.

    3. Medicine

3D product modeling is a boon to medicine with a myriad of uses. It creates models of organs, skeletal structures, and any anomalies that may occur. These models are excellent teaching aids for medical students, allowing them to visualize anatomy accurately. 3D imaging technology also allows the different textures of layers of organs, for example, to be demonstrated accurately.

    3d printed prosthetic hands

Apart from education, 3D product modeling also allows surgeons to plan surgeries. We accurately structure the medical models and can customize them to the actual size. It will enable surgeons to quickly explain the procedures to be carried out and instill confidence in their patients.

Similarly, the dental field also utilizes 3D imaging. It now prints crowns for teeth or prosthetic limbs using 3D printing technology, simplifying these processes.

    4. Architecture and Interior Design

    Schloss Dwasieden 3D Model

3D imagery is a great way for architects to bring their visions to life before breaking ground! Blueprints are used to virtually ‘construct’ buildings. This can be used to demonstrate the interior plans and exterior views. They offer different perspectives, allowing the building to be viewed from ground level to bird’ s-eye views.

Similarly with interior design, clients can view their future homes and workplaces as the interior designer envisions them. They can change the arrangement to their liking or even decide on new upholstery before even going close to a store. This allows for projects to be approved easily and modifications can be easily made before any actual work begins.

    5. Fashion and Jewellery

Always at the cutting edge (pardon the pun) of technology, the fashion industry knows how to use 3D product modeling to its advantage. Artists and fashion designers can model 3D dynamic clothing on computers. This allows them to play around with different textiles and create virtual fashion catalogues for online shopping websites. Designers now create clothing for various avatars in video games and animated movies.

It can be used similarly for designing jewellery where the product is created virtually to see how different precious materials can be incorporated into a design without actually having to create it physically. This allows jewellers to offer highly customised products with their clientele being able to view products before they are made to order resulting in higher levels of customer satisfaction.

    3d ring

D product modeling can find uses in almost any industry one can think of. Even Forbes agrees that 3D printing is the future.

Toolbox Studio excels as one of India’s top 3D animation companies that specialises in 3D product modeling. We collaborate closely with our clients to understand their needs and deliver our products in a timely and cost-efficient manner. • Unveiling the Delightful Story behind ‘Guster’: A Journey of Creativity

Unveiling the Delightful Story behind ‘Guster’: A Journey of Creativity

At Toolbox Studio , an animation company, we typically develop animation projects for clients, tailored specifically to their individual requirements and briefs. However, when we aren’t providing animation services to our esteemed and highly satisfied customers, we still develop certain videos as our own in-house productions.

The team recently put together the amusing story of a primitive human called Guster in the form of 2D animation. Here’s 3 minutes of complete madness in the wild!

Read on to know how we went about it and ended up creating the final video.

    The Plot

Guster is a story set in prehistoric times and centers around one portly lead character – a vertically challenged caveman dressed in an animal skin toga with wild, frizzy hair, and oversized crooked teeth.

This is, of course, Guster, and the story begins with him taking a stroll through the forest, whistling nonchalantly as he goes. He spots a mango tree in bloom, and one particular specimen of the succulent summer fruit catches his eye. The entire plot revolves around his humorous attempts to retrieve this fruit from its high perch, with a little twist of fate thrown in at the very end to keep you thoroughly entertained till the very last second.

We won’t tell you what that twist is though; you’ll just have to watch the video and find out for yourself!

The story of Guster is one that every one of us can draw parallels to. Perseverance, failure, thinking outside the box, and the vagaries of fate are all subjects we grapple with on a daily basis. And we’ve tried our best to touch upon all of this in our latest animated short.

    The Process

Before we go any further, here is a little teaser trailer of the film, just to give you some context.

Now that you have had a taste of what Guster is about, let us provide you with a little insight into how the video was developed.

    1. The Script

The most important facet of the audio-visual medium is that no matter what the genre, format and style of video, it always needs to tell a story. Therefore, you have to begin any project with a strong script. The script is the first and one of the most crucial steps in this whole process. No matter how much, glitz, glamour and shiny special effects you throw into the mix, it will all come to naught if your animation isn’t built on the steady foundation of a solid script.

Here is an extract from the very beginning of the first draft of the Guster script, just to give you an idea of how we write scripts, and how many tweaks and changes are incorporated to the original idea during production –

“The story begins with a village scene. In the middle of the screen, we see a huge and flourished mango tree. The camera cuts to a funny looking, tribal character walking around the tree. Suddenly, one of the big, ripe mangoes attract his attention. We cut to a shot where he’s looking at the mango with utmost curiosity. Happiness and hunger are the emotions we see on his face. Cut to his eye pupils in which we see the mangos.”

“Long shot, where we can see the entire village in the background as well as the character looking and drooling over the mango. He starts to jump on the spot, trying to reach to mango on which he had his eyes all along. Sadly, due to his short height, he is not able to reach to the mango. He tries to jump again, but in vain. As soon as he tries to reach to the mango, again, by jumping up towards it, he falls down, and, hurts himself.”

    2. The Storyboard

The crucial second step after the creation of a solid script is the storyboard. A storyboard is the first visual representation of the script, and as such acts as a blueprint for any video-based production. A sketch of every scene is made, almost like panels of a comic book, with accompanying dialogue or voice overs written down next to them. The image below represents a snapshot of the storyboard we created for Guster.

    guster storyboard
    3. The Outliner

An Outliner is a rough representation of what the final video could look like. This is the step where Guster first came to life.

    guster outliner

Once the Outliner was in place, it provided us with the right context for what we could do to tweak the storyline, video length, etc. before anything was really set in stone.

    4. Background and animation

Once we were satisfied with the story and its content, we moved to developing the background, giving the animation its colour and sparkle, and worked tirelessly on bringing the character to life. The most difficult and time-consuming part of the process, and the one that either elevates the video to the next level or leaves it flat.

After all the tiniest details such as expression changes were added in, and the background score was incorporated into the fold, the video was finally ready. With Guster, there were a lot of elements such as the fluttering of a leaf and the arrival and departure of a frog in a blink-and-you’ll-miss-it moment that needed to go in at this juncture.

    guster animation

The result of all these steps, and all the effort we put in, was a delightful little animation that is light and easy to digest, extremely easy on the eye, and yet one that has a strong underlying message. The result, is Guster.

  • 2D, 3D, ‘2.5’D Animation & 5 Good Reasons to Create Animated Videos

    2D, 3D, ‘2.5’D Animation & 5 Good Reasons to Create Animated Videos

Animated explainer videos have become an extremely popular form of communicating marketing messages to consumers because they can do so in an entertaining and engaging format.

However, the effectiveness of animated explainer videos is by no means a blanket effect. Not all explainers will translate into popular and engaging pieces of content. Multiple factors guide an explainer’s path to success or obscurity. These factors include the visual quality of the animation, the script and story, choosing the right voice-over artist, and even the music used in the video. Each of these factors can make or break the video. Because there is no one-size-fits-all formula for the success of explainer videos, you can only ape what your competition is doing and hope that your video will turn out as effective, too.

The most important decision that decides the popularity of an animated video is the format through which you choose to have it created. 2D, 2.5D and 3D are the choices you typically have in front of you, and each method of rendering the animation has its own individual traits.

To help you decide which one would be the right fit for you, here is a breakdown of what each brings to the fore:

    • 2D Animation

The simplest form of animation, 2D, is effective in various scenarios. While the visual is flat, meaning it lacks a bit of dynamism, the flat plane results in a format that causes less strain to the viewer’s eyes. 2D is excellent when using a character to tell a story or turning something like a static infographic into an engaging video. It isn’t the best medium to depict complexities or deeply technical visuals, but keeping things sweet and simple is excellent. Here is a short 2D animation (Toolbox Studio’s very own 2D animation production showreel) that showcases the medium’s qualities and versatility

    • 2.5D Animation

2.5D animation, as the name suggests, lies somewhere between the 2D and 3D space. It is a form of animation that relies on 3D objects placed within a 2D environment. This means that typically, while the background is flat, the hero subject of the video is in 3D. It creates an intriguing effect that, when harnessed correctly, can add a different feel and texture to the video. And, of course, typically, 2.5D isn’t as expensive to create as a fully-fledged 3D animation, either. Here is a quick example of 2.5D animation.

    • 3D Animation

The top dog of the animation world, 3D videos are the most visually immersive of the lot, thanks to the additional feeling of depth they bring to the screen. 3D animations can explain even the most complex subjects in an incredibly detailed and delightful way. Of course, this depth and level of detail comes at a price because 3D is usually the most expensive form of animation. Please take a look at our profoundly immersive and painstakingly detailed 3D animated short to understand the medium’s potential.

Now that we know the different types of animated videos, here is how they can help businesses big and small in their marketing efforts.

5 factors that make animation the perfect medium for marketing explainer videos

    1.Letting the creative juices flow

The limitations of the natural world don’t restrict animation. The laws of physics, for example, don’t necessarily apply, so your characters can do all sorts of amazing things that aren’t possible in live-action videos.

    2. Conveying messages with brevity

Using animation, you can simplify what you need to say and let the visuals do the talking. You don’t need to rely on voiceovers or physical movements to help convey your message; the animation itself conveys the message for you. This means you can say more in a shorter span of time, and in this day and age, when viewers lose interest so quickly, this is crucial because every second counts.

    3. Demystifying complex technical processes

If your business involves highly technical processes that you want your viewers to understand, then animations are the way to go about it. You can show a fully functioning cutout of your complex mechanics to simplify it, and provide a running commentary, and slow down or speed up the action based on how difficult or easy it is to understand.

    4.Breaking away from the monotony

There is a reason why animations are so popular among children and adults alike – they are just plain fun to watch! After the tedium of watching a barrage of live action ads on a daily basis, an animated explainer makes for great visual relief. It can be darker than the darkest set or brighter and more colourful than anything else we can replicate in the real world. As long as you can think it, it can be done, and this is what give animation the upper hand in terms of entertainment value.

    5. Cost effective

Animations are a whole lot cheaper to develop than a comparable live action video. Even 3D animation, which is the most expensive kind, is much cheaper than making live action videos. This is because animation doesn’t require the hiring of a set, actors’ fees, props and set design, video shooting equipment, lighting, permits or anything of that sort. Furthermore, any tweaks that need to be made to the animation are easy and not costly. Re-shooting even a single scene, on the other hand, will involve a whole round of investment.

We should know, after all, Toolbox Studio is an animation studio! If you aren’t able to pick your favorite type of animation, contact us and we’ll show you our demos and help you understand what types of animated videos can help you communicate your brand’s message in the best possible way.

An animated explainer video company can help you add a new dimension to your business by reaching out to your target audience on an emotional level and delighting them visually!
